The Local Government Graduate Finance Programme gives you the experience, knowledge and understanding you need to build a successful career in public finance. Joining one of seven London boroughs on a secure, fixed-term contract, you’ll spend four years learning about every aspect of local authority finance – from key corporate processes to risk management. The scheme offers a rich variety of training and professional exposure, and you will contribute to all kinds of challenging operational work and project initiatives tailored to your development needs.

Key responsibilities will include preparing and monitoring budgets, ensuring savings targets are managed and achieved, and providing high-quality financial advice to managers and government departments.

Do you have what it takes?


This is a scheme for the finance leaders of the future – for graduates who are driven to lead and succeed, who aren’t afraid of taking on new challenges, and who have a genuine desire to make a difference to communities. To qualify for the scheme, you must have:

  • Minimum 2:2 degree in any subject (expected or achieved)
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent (Level 4 or above)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong numeracy and computer literacy
  • Willingness to study for a professional qualification while working full time

Please note: our graduate roles are politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989. We are therefore unable to accept applications from candidates currently involved with political activity, both during and outside of election periods.

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

Barking and Dagenham is on the up - from welcoming London’s buzzing, iconic markets - Billingsgate, Spitalfields and Smithfield - to opening the largest Hollywood style film studio in London, the borough is bursting with new opportunity. Not to mention plans for 50,000 new homes and an injection of 20,000 new jobs to the borough by 2035.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council

Hammersmith and Fulham is one of the 13 inner London boroughs situated in the central western part of London on the transport routes between the City and Heathrow airport, as well as running alongside a section of the River Thames. With a population estimated at over 185,000 the age profile of Hammersmith and Fulham continues to be typical of a young, diverse and mobile urban population.

Westminster City Council

Westminster is the UK’s political and cultural centre, containing world-renowned theatres, restaurants, hotels and entertainment. Businesses in the city generate around £54bn of the UK’s economic output and it’s home to over a quarter of a million people, living in distinctive and well-known neighbourhoods, which are an important part of this great city.

London Borough of Lambeth

Lambeth is one of the most vibrant and diverse boroughs in London covering Brixton, Streatham, Clapham and Waterloo. We provide services such as planning, social work, housing and schools to 303,000 residents and hundreds of businesses. London Borough of Barnet

Based in our new headquarters in Colindale, the London Borough of Barnet formed in 1965 is a suburban London borough in North London. It forms part of Outer London and is the largest London borough by population. As one of the largest populations the London Borough of Barnet has an extensive regeneration programme with key developments such as Brent Cross.

London Borough of Islington

The London Borough of Islington lies in the heart of the city, with thriving cultural, culinary, and nightlife experiences within its 6 square miles. Although geographically small, Islington has a young and growing population and is culturally and economically diverse. All of this combines to make Islington an interesting, dynamic and challenging place to develop your skills and enhance your experiences.

London Borough of Enfield

12 miles from the centre of London, Enfield covers an area of 31.7 square miles and has an estimated population of 333,869 with a large population of both 0-14s and older people in comparison to the rest of London. It is a diverse place, which has welcomed communities from across the world. In particular, it has large Turkish, Greek and Cypriot populations.
