Become a qualified expert

Throughout your time on the scheme, you will be studying for The Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA) Professional Qualification, which is the key qualification for anyone pursuing a career in public finance management. The qualification covers a broad range of expertise and will provide you with a solid understanding of business, strategy, leadership and management, tax, audit, and accountancy.

What’s involved

There are three stages to the CIPFA Professional Qualification, each involving a combination of modules, half modules or case studies. Each module is assessed by a 3-hour exam. Each half-module is assessed by a 2-hour exam. The case study is assessed by a 7-hour exam.

You will attain a recognised qualification after successfully completing each of the first two stages. On completing the Final Test of Competence, you will be eligible to apply for full CIPFA membership and to use the letters CPFA after your name. You will also need to complete the Initial Professional Development Scheme (IPDS), which provides you with practical experience alongside your studies.


To help you prepare for exam success, you will attend classes at the CIPFA Education & Training Centre (CETC) in Borough High Street. You will also be able access learning materials and self-assessment tools via the online Student Learning Centre. The course is offered on day release. If you are starting without any exemptions, the course should take approximately three years to complete.
